Plain answers, no hedging.
The questions parents at Garden Suburb have actually asked us, grouped by the part of school life they touch. If yours isn't here, write — we read everything.
Getting started.
Codes, links, lost emails, and the practical first ten minutes.
How do I get an invitation code?
The school sends one. For the autumn term launch, every family on the school's existing parent contact list will get an email with a six-character code and a download link. If you haven't received yours by the first day of term, the school office can re-issue it.
I lost the email. Now what?
Check spam first — some invitation emails still get filtered. If it's not there, the school officecan re-issue it, or WhatsApp Ryan and we'll sort it.
Can my partner use the same code?
Each adult should make their own account, but you can both join the same family. After the first parent finishes onboarding, they can invite a second adult from settings — that adult gets their own link, sees the same children and feed, and can manage notifications independently.
Grandparents and childminders can be invited the same way, with read-only access if you prefer.
Do I need to install an app?
For the autumn term, yes — an iOS app and an Android app, both free. A web version is on the way for parents who'd rather not add another icon to their phone.
How long does setup take?
Under three minutes for one child, four for two, five for three. Beyond that, we owe you a cup of tea.
Family & schools.
Siblings across two schools, year groups, and what happens when things change.
I've only got one child. Is this still for me?
Absolutely. Most families at Garden Suburb have one child, and kidSchool is just as useful for them — arguably more so, because there's nothing to filter and the feed stays quiet. Siblings are a feature when you need it, not a prerequisite.
My children are at both schools. Will it work?
That's exactly who kidSchool is for, too. The product was built around the Infant–Junior pairing, not retrofitted onto it. One app, one feed, both schools — siblings sit next to each other.
What if my child is in an unusual year group for their age?
You can override the auto-suggested school during onboarding — for example, picking Junior for a Year 2 child who's moved up early. We'll show a quiet note acknowledging it, but we'll trust you. The school's own records remain the source of truth.
What happens when my child moves up to Junior?
Their feed moves with them. At the end of Year 2, the school marks the transition; on the first day of Year 3, your child's card switches from indigo to mustard and starts pulling from the Junior's calendar. No re-onboarding.
Can I see all my children at once, or one at a time?
Both. The default view shows everyone in chronological order, tagged with the child's name. A filter chip at the top lets you focus on one child when, say, you're packing only their PE kit.
My child has left the school. How do I close the account?
Settings → Leave kidSchool. One tap, then a confirmation the next day to make sure it wasn't accidental. Your account and the data behind it are deleted within seven days, and we email a written confirmation when it's done.
Will it replace ParentMail / the school newsletter / the WhatsApp group?
Eventually — for the things that belong in a feed (events, actions, deadlines, celebrations). The school newsletter keeps its place for long-form writing; the class WhatsApp keeps its place for the social bits. We're not trying to replace the village, just tidy the noticeboard.
Privacy & safeguarding.
What we hold, what we don't, and what we'd never do.
What information do you hold about my child?
Name, year group, optional class, and the school they attend. That's the entire profile. No photos, no birthdays, no medical information, no pickup details. The school holds those — we don't copy them.
Is the data sold or shared with advertisers?
No. Never has been, never will be. There are no ads in kidSchool and no plan for them. The product is funded by a fixed annual contribution from each school — not by your data.
Where is the data stored?
On servers in the UK, run by a UK-registered data controller. The full data-protection notice (registered with the ICO) is linked from the footer.
Are you using AI on my child's information?
No model training, no third-party AI processing of family data. Where we use any automated tooling — for example, to suggest a school from a year group — it runs on the device or on our own server, on a tiny rule rather than a model. We'll be open about this if it ever changes.
What about photos of children in the feed?
Schools choose which families have given photo consent. Children whose families haven't are never shown. If you want to change your consent, the school office is the right route — kidSchool reflects what they hold, it doesn't override it.
Can I see exactly what's stored about me?
Yes. Settings → Your data → Download. A JSON file, human-readable, including everything we hold and the timestamps. UK GDPR gives you the right to ask; we make it a button.
Still stuck?
If your question isn't here, the school office can usually help — or message Ryan directly. We reply the same day.
